Summary

Trees are one of humanity's most constant and most varied companions。 From India's sacred banyan tree to the fragrant cedar of Lebanon, they offer us sanctuary and inspiration—not to mention the raw materials for everything from aspirin to maple syrup。

In Around the World in 80 Trees, expert Jonathan Drori uses plant science to illuminate how trees play a role in every part of human life, from the romantic to the regrettable。 Stops on the trip include the lime trees of Berlin's Unter den Linden boulevard, which intoxicate amorous Germans and hungry bees alike, the swankiest streets in nineteenth-century London, which were paved with Australian eucalyptus wood, and the redwood forests of California, where the secret to the trees' soaring heights can be found in the properties of the tiniest drops of water。

Each of these strange and true tales—populated by self-mummifying monks, tree-climbing goats and ever-so-slightly radioactive nuts—is illustrated by Lucille Clerc, taking the reader on a journey that is as informative as it is beautiful。

Did you know that Venice wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the alder tree? And what about the Argan tree, which protects its fruits with thorny branches… which those sneaky goats have learnt to avoid? These are only two examples of the astonishing facts described in “Around the World in 80 Trees” by Jonathan Drori, WWF ambassador and trustee of the Eden Project (among other things)。This beautifully illustrated book explores the relationship between humans and trees as well as trees and animals。 Un Did you know that Venice wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the alder tree? This is absolutely one of my favorite books ever。 I tried to space it out and read about one tree each day。 It was such a delight。 I learned so much, and chuckled often at the witty writing! The illustrations were far and above the best part。 So lovely!!

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 TREES by Jonathan Drori I was very happy to read these 'tree stories' and get to know more about the trees I am familiar with。 The author has chosen the iconic trees of India, namely the Cashew, the Betel nut, the Neem, the Peepul and the Banyan。 I read the book with keen interest and made a note of the trees I'd like to know on my next visit to the UK and the USA。My personal watchlist during my future visits to London and Washington DC。 would include: The London Plane, wh AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 TREES by Jonathan Drori I was very happy to read these 'tree stories' and get to know more about the trees I am familiar with。 The author has chosen the iconic trees of India, namely the Cashew, the Betel nut, the Neem, the Peepul and the Banyan。 I read the book with keen interest and made a note of the trees I'd like to know on my next visit to the UK and the USA。My personal watchlist during my future visits to London and Washington DC。 would include: The London Plane, which makes up more than half of London’s trees。 Berkeley Square has the most impressive specimens (planted with remarkable foresight in 1789 by a local resident), and the Leylandii, most grown as a hedge for anyone seeking seclusion。 I wish I had this book in hand when I'd come across a Rowan, silver birch, elm, willow, European box, linden, beech and chestnut oak spruce alder quince and bayThe Maple tree, grows in abundance on the Maple Ridge Road and it overlooks the Bethesda Trolley Trail, where one can find several trees。 Here I will identify the trees and especially try to spot the Eastern White pine, the tree of heaven, the bald cypress, the Indian black tea, the black walnut, quaking aspen, jojoba, redwood, hemlock, tan oak and the pine。 。。。more

4。5 starsThis is another great example of a book-as-beautiful-object: a substantial hardback with thick, creamy pages, printed in full colour, with illustrations that are both detailed and impressionistic at once。 It is a multisensorial delight。 (Interesting, I prefer the more muted tones of the cover of the hardback edition, when compared to the rainbow-hued paperback, but I digress。)It is also packed with information。 Each tree is described in only 1-2 pages of text but there is much to absorb 4。5 starsThis is another great example of a book-as-beautiful-object: a substantial hardback with thick, creamy pages, printed in full colour, with illustrations that are both detailed and impressionistic at once。 It is a multisensorial delight。 (Interesting, I prefer the more muted tones of the cover of the hardback edition, when compared to the rainbow-hued paperback, but I digress。)It is also packed with information。 Each tree is described in only 1-2 pages of text but there is much to absorb - the discussion revolves around the significance of these trees to humans (mostly) and to their ecosystems。 This brings in snippets of science, medicine, history and folklore, even popular culture。 It has been fascinating to learn of the very long history of human understanding about trees, and of the importance of trees to the development of civilisation (such as by improving the chances of survival in inhospitable environments, or by providing a source of food / tools / medicines)。 The author hasn't shied away from the darker aspects of history - tales of over-exploitation, and connections to slavery have been included。 There is also a detailed Further Reading section at the end - a good example of a generalist work supported by substantial research。 。。。more

The book itself is a beautiful object。 (Some very heavy fancy paper) The illustrations are so outstanding I’d be tempted to call it an art book。 However the writing is everything I could have wanted。 Go ahead try to google about a tree your interested in, and it’s relationship to humankind throughout history。 I’ll tell you what you will find, ads for trees! The book is as good as its Plants counterpart。 Amazing illustrations, interesting short essays that combine and balance very well between history, myths and facts。

This book is fantastic! I highly recommend it。 The sections are short and fun to read, and the illustrations by Lucille Clerc are gorgeous。

This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read。 Everything about it is just gorgeous。 The illustrations are STUNNING。 Even the paper used to print the book is wonderful。 It’s such a fantastic book, I’m willing to let go of the bit in the section of the avocado tree claiming that guacamole is “as all-American as Thanksgiving turkey。”

I absolutely loved this book!!! It was so informative not only about trees but different cultures as well。 This book gives great insight into ecosystems around the world and how they function with or without the main influence of trees。 The illustrations within the book were remarkable and overall I just had a amazing time reading the book-I’m so excited for the new one about plants!!!

This book is absolutely amazing。 I have been wanting to learn more about different trees, and this was a perfect introduction。 It also inspired me creatively。 Something I appreciate is the mix of information; the author includes associated myths, historical facts, and breeding knowledge。 I would definitely recommend if you are interested in learning more about what is around you。

Essentially, this book contains 80 essays on different trees, looking at what makes them unique scientifically, historically, and culturally。 I'd read one tree per night and I loved pacing this book like that。 The slowness helped the significance of trees on human life and progress really sink in。 Plus, the writing was accessible and entertaining。 Now it's time to go around the world in 80 plants。 Essentially, this book contains 80 essays on different trees, looking at what makes them unique scientifically, historically, and culturally。 I'd read one tree per night and I loved pacing this book like that。 The slowness helped the significance of trees on human life and progress really sink in。 Plus, the writing was accessible and entertaining。 Now it's time to go around the world in 80 plants。 。。。more

I love trees so much and this book just drew me in。 I like it so much that I bought it to refer back to from time to time。 All the symbiotic relationships between themselves and other living things are fascinating and very moving。

I suppose anyone thinking this book would be interesting is automatically a super nerd, so I claim the title and will bear it proudly。 I have to say, though, that I wasn't wrong。 This is a fascinating book, and such a fun read。 Dori has a wonderful dry wit that had me chuckling more than once, and each time it was completely unexpected。 (Wonderful comedic timing in a book that wasn't expected to be anything but educational。)Though I was at first disappointed that the images in the book are illus I suppose anyone thinking this book would be interesting is automatically a super nerd, so I claim the title and will bear it proudly。 I have to say, though, that I wasn't wrong。 This is a fascinating book, and such a fun read。 Dori has a wonderful dry wit that had me chuckling more than once, and each time it was completely unexpected。 (Wonderful comedic timing in a book that wasn't expected to be anything but educational。)Though I was at first disappointed that the images in the book are illustrations rather than photographs, I quickly gained a massive appreciation for Clerc's ability to demonstrate the details you likely wouldn't capture with a photograph。 True, this book is not as colorful as I had hoped, but the beauty is no less what I was expecting。 I do recommend reading this with your phone close by, though, so you can Google actual photos of the trees you're reading about so you can get the full picture。Of course I had heard of many of the trees featured in this book, but knew next to nothing about them (excepting the varieties that are from my neck of the woods), so it was fun to get stories to go with the name。One thing to be mindful of is that there is a not-so-subtle conservation component to almost all of the entries in this book。 This is, of course, because humans are extremely good at wreaking havoc on the natural world and making "conservation" a necessity anywhere we go, and while I appreciate Dori including these points in his book, it was also quite depressing to realize just how much damage we truly are doing, when you read lines like, "Unfortunately, the only place to see this tree in the wild anymore is。。。" in nearly every entry。Really truly an educational and fascinating book, with interesting folklore, history, ecology, and biology supporting it all。 (Teaser: This book contains an entry on a tree that bleeds bright red sap, and another that has turquoise。 They're fantastic。)Next on my shelf: Around the World in 80 Plants。 。。。more

An absolute must read! History, culture, science, climate change, and a world of wonder in each tree。 Now I want to revisit countries I have travelled to, to stand in the shadow of, and marvel at, these giants of our world。 (And incidentally, do you know why trees seem unable to surpass a height of 120m?? I do now!)
